USA LUTINO HISTORY

The USA Lutino project was started on August 29, 2002, but has not yet advanced to the point where Lutinos are available for sale. Some writers state that it can take up to fifteen years to establish a new mutation. However the USA Lutino Project will have completed all testing as of 8.29.12. The final test will determine the affect of the White Breast on the pinkish or Translucent Breast of the USA Lutinos.
The project has taken a lengthy time because our first Lutino Female was carrying both the Lutino and the Pastel Green (Co-Dominant Sex Linked Yellow gene). Each generation from the first USA Lutino (SF) Pastel Green female, who was named Winnie by her owner, took one year or more to arrive at a breeding age. The Lutino gene was sex-linked, requiring two years for maturtiy. Another factor in the length of time taken, is due to not breeding any closer than cousins to insure a strong USA Lutino Gouldian.
Winnie, the first Lutino (SF) Pastel Green Female in the USA, was bred to a Green Male and produced Single Factor Pastel Green males, who were carrying both the Lutino and the Pastel Green gene. The sons of Winnie were bred to Green Females to obtain Lutino Females, which had a 50/50 chance to be pure Lutino (without the Pastel Green gene). The Lutino Females were mated to Green Males to determine if they were carrying a pure Lutino gene, without the Pastel Green gene.

The first three Lutino (SF) Pastel Green Females born in the Delmar Gouldian Aviary, named Winita and Wineta, and Winata, were the Granddaughters of Winnie. They were tested and proved to be carrying the Pastel Green gene and the Lutino gene like their Grandmother, Winnie.
Four Great Granddaughters of Winnie, who are named Danita, Banita. Lanita and Torah, were tested in in 2006 and 2007. As of the Spring 2006, the USA Lutino gene was proven to have been separated from the Pastel Green gene. Danita, one Winnie's four Great Granddaughters, proved to be a pure USA Lutino.
Danita, a Yellow Headed Lutino Female, proved to be carrying only the Gouldian Lutino gene. Danita was mated to a Red Headed Purple Breasted Green Male, named Daron. Danita, produced Green Males and no other mutations, which proved that she was a pure USA Lutino. If Danita had produced any Pastel Green Males, then she would have been carrying both the Lutino and the Pastel Green gene. A total of seven Lutino females were tested and only Danita proved to be pure.
Danita, the first USA pure Lutino female, had three Split for Lutino Green sons, who were named Dante, Monte and Jonte. Dante, was the eldest, and was born on 5.2.06. Monte was born 1.17.07 and Jonte was born 6.9.07.

Dante, Monte and Jonte were mated to Green Females and produced 7 pure USA Lutino Females and possible Split for Lutino Green Males.
The daughers of Dante were named Estie, Angelina and Star. The daughters of Jonte were named Vontae and Jontae. The daughers of Monte were named Kaydie and Beatie. Vontae, Jontae and Kaydie were mated to Split for Lutino Green Males. These Split for Lutino Green Males were obtained by mating their Grandmother, Danita, once to a first cousin and second time to her father's first cousin to obtain more distantly related stock.
Vontae and Duke produced the first USA Lutino male on 2.19.10. Vontae also produced two USA Lutino males, named Victor and Vander. Victor was bred to a Green Female named Divina in 2011. Vander was bred to a blue female, named Christa in 2011. There is a video of Vander and Christa in the Video Gallery.
Vontae and Duke are my most amazing breeding pair for the USA Lutinos. Vontae and Duke can produce Green Females, Split for Lutino Green Males, Blue Females, Split for Lutino Blue Males, Lutino Females and Lutino Males, Albino Females and Albino Males.
By 2011, I had established distantly related lines of USA Lutinos, which could be bred to each other in 2012. The best method for the strongest stock is a Lutino Female bred to a Split to Lutino Green Male. The Lutino Male should be bred to a Green Female. Because the USA Lutino gene is sex-linked, there are no Green Females Split for Lutino.
The breeding method for the USA Lutino Gouldian is the same as the Budgerigar Lutino. A Budgerigar Lutino Breeding Chart is found at http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/charts/lutinoch.html I have posted the first USA Lutino Breeding Chart in the photos at the PHOTO GALLERY.

A date and price for the selling of the USA Lutinos to the public has not yet been determined. However, when the USA Lutino becomes available on the public market, it will be bred according to genetic charts for Lutinos in other bird species. The USA Lutino gene will have not only been established, but fully tested, while not placing birds with unknown genetics in the USA Gouldian gene pool. I am thinkng that responsible breeders will appreciate the time needed to complete and fully test the USA Lutino gene.
After 10 years of breeding and developing the USA Lutino Project the final testing was completed on 8.29.12. This test determined what affect the White Breast had in relation to the USA Lutno Pink Breast. The first White Breasted USA Lutino Female, named Tera, was born on 8.29.12.
The second White Breasted Lutino, named Kyra, who is first cousin to Tera, was born on 10.29.12. While Tera shows as White Breasted, Kyra retained a small amount of the USA Lutino Pink Breast. Kyra is identified as a White Breasted Lutino because she has two White Breasted parents. Tera and Kyra are the Granddaughters of Jontae and Tyde.
I am grateful that the USA Lutino Project has been completed. The project has fulfilled our expectations for producing strong USA Lutino Gouldians. Their strength, eyesight, breeding ability and longevity have been tested with great results. I have tested the breeding of distantly related Lutino Males to Lutino Females, which have produced excellent offspring. The first USA Lutino babies born, with our anticipation of selling to selected breeders, were produced on 2.5.13.
My sincere thanks to all those who have supported and given advice for the project. I want to express my appreciation to James Watson, who has served as project advisor since the project began on 8.29.02.
